The Mercedes SL63 AMG and the Art of the Midlife Crisis
There’s a certain point in life when you stop caring about touchscreens, wireless chargers, and 0–60 bragging rights, and start chasing something far rarer -feeling.
That’s where my 17-year-old Mercedes SL63 AMG comes in.
On paper, it’s outdated. It doesn’t have Apple CarPlay, it doesn’t self-park, and it’s about as subtle as a fireworks display in a library. But every time I press that start button and hear the 6.2-litre V8 clear its throat, it reminds me exactly why old is sometimes better than new.

Old Tech vs New Tech
Modern cars are clever. Too clever, maybe. They correct your steering, limit your throttle, and keep you safely between the lines, but they also dull the connection.
The SL, by contrast, feels raw. It moves, shifts, and even misbehaves in a way that makes you part of the drive. The gearbox has attitude, the suspension talks to you, and the throttle response feels alive, like a conversation between man and machine rather than code and sensor.
More Smiles Per Gallon
No, it’s not frugal. But smiles per gallon? Off the charts.
Every run to the shops becomes a soundtrack, every tunnel an event. There’s something beautifully pointless about it, in the best possible way.
You don’t buy an SL like this to save money; you buy it to save your soul.
Midlife Crisis or Midlife Clarity?

People call it a midlife crisis. I call it midlife clarity.
At some point, you realise that the car you wanted in your 30s might just be the one that makes sense in your 50s, not because it’s practical, but because it reminds you that life’s meant to be felt.
The SL sits there on the driveway, top down, daring you to take the long way home. And every time you do, you feel twenty again.
The Perfect Second Car
If you’ve got the space, this might be the perfect second car. A weekend joy machine. Something to remind you why you ever fell in love with cars in the first place.
Because while new cars offer convenience, this offers connection.
It’s not perfect. It’s noisy, thirsty, and occasionally moody, but it’s real. And in a world obsessed with digital perfection, that might just make it perfect.
Verdict:
🚗 Forget the gadgets. Forget the range anxiety. Find something with character, turn the key, and let life make noise again.
What else is out there? Jag F Type? Cobra? Ferrari California?
